Is Porn banned in South East Asia? Know your laws

The internet has been used to make porn since its inception. Although it is a huge international business, it is not widely accessible. Is porn legal in Indonesia?

Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country but it prides itself in its religious diversity. However, porn is not allowed in any of these religions. The country is very conservative socially and porn is outright prohibited.


The government won't take porn lightly with the new rules in 2018. The Indonesian government spent US$15 million on new technology that could crawl the internet searching for porn.


Unfortunately, instead of sharing the best sites with their friends, the results are given to internet service providers (ISPs), who are then forced to block them. A national Safe Search is also available, and cannot be disabled on any browser.

Can I see porn in the Philippines?"

The Philippines is the South East Asian capital of porn. Here, porn is seen by more people and is enjoyed for longer periods of time than any other region. It doesn't necessarily mean that it is legal.


In 1992, the Philippines introduced a ban against pornography. Porn can be defined as any activity that promotes human immorality, obscenity or indecency. The law was created to protect children from being exploited. We are all in favour of protecting children from abuse.


This means that ISPs in the country are sometimes told to prevent access from porn sites. It is a frustrating experience for porn lovers across the country.


What are the Thai porn laws?

Thailand is known for its sexual liberation. It is a land of contradictions. Despite the highest number of transgender surgery each year, porn is banned. You'll be left wondering about Thailand's curious sex laws.


The Computer Crimes Act 2007 banned porn. The Computer Crimes Act 2007 bans porn and allows the government to close down sites that violate the law. The offences related to the transmission of illegal content via a computer are what cover porn.


Although you might not be able to remember the name of the law, you will know its meaning. You could be sentenced to up to 20 years imprisonment if you are caught with porn. The Bangkok Hilton is a familiar name.


Is porn illegal in Vietnam?

In the 1970s, Vietnam beat the US by a wide margin and has since banned porn. With a little coffee money, it can seem like everything is possible in Vietnam. But, you need to be able to recognize when you are doing something wrong, and when to grease your palms.


In 2001, the one-party state passed a law that prohibited the use of the internet for the following:


Anything that is against the government

Content that insults Vietnamese leaders and heroes

Viet Nam's history is distorted

Pornography

Sex materials

It seems a bit strange to include porn on the list. But...


This article 326 of 2015's Criminal Code provides detailed information on the penalties and sentences for porn.


Regularly, the government orders ISPs and the BBC to block porn sites. The type of device you use to connect to the internet and the way you do it will determine what content you can access online.


Is pornography permitted in Malaysia?

Malaysia is a Muslim nation. Sharia law applies to anyone with an official Muslim ID card. This is not surprising, considering that porn in Malaysia is illegal.


You can't own, watch, make or sell porn in Malaysia. The whole government unit is responsible for checking out porn sites and instructing ISPs to stop access.


What are Singapore's porn laws and regulations?

There are some restrictions in Singapore on porn. If you are looking to own or produce pornography in the city, there are a few laws that can help you get out of trouble.

In Phnom Penh, porn can be easily found on the streets. It was also popular to be seen in cafes and karaoke bars prior to recent legal changes.


The 2008 Law on the Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation prohibited the distribution of pornography including child pornography. The South East Asia Globe reports that the law has not been changed much on the ground, and porn remains readily available.


Myanmar

The country formerly known by the name Burma was subject to military dictatorship up until very recently. This regime was able to ban whatever they wanted at any time. There was very little internet access during their reign, so porn wasn’t an issue.


Even though Myanmar has some degree of democracy, there aren't any laws that ban pornography. Hurrah!


This doesn't mean you won't be in trouble if you're asked. There could be laws regarding violating peace or security which could lead to a criminal prosecution. You should not go to a temple and check out the hot-squirting videos posted by a party that you belong to.


According to recent reports porn sites are being banned. Burmese citizens had their porn access severely curtailed in order to cope with the crisis caused by the pandemic. Section 77 of Telecommunications Law was used by the government to block ISPs from blocking not only news sites but also your favourite porn peddlers.


What is the situation with Lao porn law?

Laos is a single-party state with decrees and not laws per se. When the government doesn't like something, they ban it. This is exactly what happened with pornography in 2014.


The Porn access was prohibited by a decree. People could lose internet access if they are caught accessing porn online.


If you are caught with regular, old, or vintage printed porn you could end up in prison for upto one year and be subject to fines of between US$6-24. It almost seems like it's worth it.
