What happened to Pornhub, Visa, and Mastercard? – blog sinparty

In December 2020, international headlines were made when the news broke that Mastercard and Visa had stopped paying Pornhub. These payments were not stopped by the payment processors.

A story published by The New York Times December 4 2020 prompted Visa and Mastercard's decision to withdraw services from Pornhub. This story sparked a firestorm under Pornhub, and attracted attention to the industry, especially user-generated content.

Let's look at the timeline that led to the decision to "defund Pornhub", and some of its implications.

October 28 th 2018, Girl's family posts videos on Pornhub

Dawn Giannini, a California teacher, was arrested after she raped a relative aged 14 years old and posted the videos to Pornhub. One of Giannini’s former students found the videos and reported it to authorities, who arrested her on 24 felonies.

The 49-year old was sentenced to almost seven years imprisonment in January 2020 for her crimes.

October 24, th 2019, Missing girl discovered on Pornhub

A 16-year old girl disappeared from her Florida home around Christmas 2018. She was seen with two men at a 7-Eleven nearby a few weeks later but she never called home nor made contact with her family.

A year later, the girl’s mother was informed by her classmates that they had found her in videos on Pornhub and other video-hosting sites. After providing evidence to the police 30-year-old Christopher Johnson was arrested and is currently awaiting trial.

November 13 th 2019, PayPal exits Pornhub

PayPal was the method that most registered creators of Pornhub were paid. In a blog that was two years old , the website even sang praises for PayPal as a banking option.

The online payments company decided to abruptly stop offering services to Pornhub. PayPal stated in a statement to The Verge that "Pornhub made certain business payments via PayPal without our consent." We have taken steps to prevent these transactions from happening."

December 4 th2020 - "The Children of Pornhub

Nicholas Kristof, a journalist, published an opinion piece on Pornhub's child pornography to the New York Times blog. Kristof also supported the claims that Pornhub had child sex tapes. Kristof also reported reports of non-consensual violence and revenge porn.

He stated in his piece that Pornhub was "...infested by rape videos. It monetizes child and revenge rapes, pornography of women showering, racism and misogynist material, and footage of women being strangled in plastic bags.

This article featured many women who uploaded sexual content to Pornhub as young 14-year-olds. Other women also had their experiences of being trafficked published online.

One of the most common themes was the reemergence of videos multiple time, even though they were removed as teens. This can be attributed to the ability to download content from Pornhub which allows content to be uploaded multiple times.

December 7 th2020 - Investigation by payment companies into Pornhub

After spending the weekend reflecting on the matter, Visa and Mastercard began the week with separate investigations to determine if they would like to do business in Pornhub.

Visa stated that if the site is found to not be in compliance with applicable laws, they will not be able accept Visa payments.

Mastercard stated that "if the claims are substantiated we will immediately take action."

December 10 th2020 - Visa bans Pornhub Payments

Visa, a payment processing company, instructed its partners not to work with Pornhub in response to the New York Times' investigations. On December 10, Visa sent two tweets pointing out that "illegal activity" was the reason they stopped accepting payment.

Mastercard also took similar actions on the same day for the exact same reasons. The firm stated that it had found violations of their standards regarding unlawful content on their website during its investigation. We directed financial institutions that link the site to our network, to stop accepting it.

Pornhub's response was "exceptionally disappointing".

December 11 th2020 - No More Pornhub for Discovery

Discover also stopped accepting payments from Pornhub in line with its bigger competitors. A day after Visa Mastercard and Mastercard, the US-based card company issued an email to confirm their decision.

December 14th 2020 - Pornhub pulls content

Pornhub will remove any content that has not been created by verified models or partner content creators. The company tweeted a statement the same day:

This means that all Pornhub content must be uploaded by verified uploaders. This is a requirement that not only Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube have yet to implement, but also Snapchat, Snapchat, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, Snapchat, YouTube, Snapchat, and Twitter. The safety of our community is our top priority at Pornhub.

The site's content has been drastically reduced. It was estimated that there were approximately 13 million videos available for search before the changes. Pornhub now hosts just over 3 million videos.

Pornhub, Mastercard and Visa

Pornhub has known for years that there was illegal content. However, it took the withdrawal of all payment methods for Pornhub's to take action. Numerous accounts of women have been able remove illegal and unauthorised content. It is clear that Pornhub was aware of these issues.

It is uncertain how the site will be monetized in the future. There are very few ways to pay content creators and to receive payments.
